What is a Portable Fire Prevention Pump?

A Portable Fire Prevention Pump is a portable, gasoline powered water pumping system including supply hose, pump, fire hose, nozzle and water pump primer, all fully integrated into a custom cart. This Fire Prevention Pump prevents fires by using an available water source to pump water at high pressures and covering great distances to quickly and effectively wet down structures and their surroundings.

What makes Best Fire Defense Pumps the very Best?

Our pump housings are designed to deliver a large volume of water at high pressure. Mission specific design, durable and dependable components are ready when you need them! Best Fire Defense pumps are designed and tested as a complete system, not a collection of individual parts which are bolted onto a cart but were never properly designed or tested as a full system. A lack of such mission specific design will manifest itself in various areas, including reliability and usability. For example, if vibration is not properly designed out of the product, the entire unit could move and fall into the pool while you are using just when you need it the most! Another example is the use of the integrated primer pump in our systems. This allows for water to enter the pump prior to starting the engine. Without this easy to use innovation, it’s conceivable if not likely that a user, in the midst of an emergency, could forget to manually and tediously add water to the pump, thereby operating it “dry” and potentially damaging internal seals; this could render the pump inoperable.

What Pumps are not Suitable for use as Portable Fire Prevention Pumps?

This pump has a plastic housing that is not designed to function under high pressure. Plastic housings can become brittle over time, and crack when the nozzle is closed – this pump could fail while you are using it!

This pump has an aluminum housing, but cast iron parts inside (impellers and/or volutes). Cast Iron parts will rust and at the very least will stain your pool deck brown; even worse, without proper maintenance, rust can bind to the housing and internally seize the pump. This pump might not start when you need it!

What is the Portable Fire Prevention Pump Specifically Designed to Do?

The Portable Fire Prevention Pump is specifically designed to protect your home and property from approaching fires by delivering up to 100 gallons of water per minute to surrounding brush, trees and buildings. Since “Wet Stuff Doesn’t Burn”, dangerous embers or even active flames will be less likely to damage the property.

What Else Can The Portable Fire Pump Do?

Refill a Fire Engine (500 gallons) Every 5 Minutes!
Drain a flooded basement (up to 300 gallons per minute!) Drain a boat, ship or any watercraft which is taking on water (up to 300 gallons per minute!)

Provide Water Pressure into the house for showering, flushing toilets and washing dishes during emergencies or natural disasters, where municipal water service may be interrupted for hours or days.

Transfer water to or from any water storage area.
Wash Down tennis courts, decks, or other large areas or structures quickly!
Irrigate crops, large gardens, or other large outdoor areas

Why is Storing the Hose on a Reel Highly Impractical?

Fire Hoses stored on reels present a logistical problem; the hose must be completely removed from the reel before use. The user has two options: stand in place and unreel the hose into an unmanageable pile, or grab the end of the hose and run 50 feet away from your pump, then run 50 feet back to connect the hose – you’ve just run 100 feet! With Best Fire Defense products, you can remove the entire roll of hose, then grasp the coupler on one end, and unroll the hose as if ‘bowling’ – you’re now standing by the pump with the coupler in your hand, ready to connect it immediately!

When is a 50 foot Hose Better than a 100 foot Hose?

A 100 foot roll of double jacket fire hose weighs 50 pounds! Drop it and you will have a large, unmanageable pile of hose, you will spend precious time trying to straighten it out. 50 foot lengths of hose are easier to carry and easier to manage in an emergency.

Why is the Best Fire Defense Hose Better than Others out there?

Best fire defense uses double jacketed fire hose. While single jacketed hose is lighter, it is prone to ‘kinks’ that reduce available pressure and volume, and if the jacket is worn through, a major water leak is likely. Municipal fire departments use double jacketed fire hose because pool decks, landscaping, fences, etc. can be abrasive and wear through the outer jacket; the inner jacket will still protect the rubber liner.

What is the Purpose and Importance of having a Water Pump Primer?

The primer is used to fill the pump housing with water prior to starting the engine. All water pumps have either rubber or ceramic seals. These seals are kept cool by the water in the pump housing. During the tense moments when the pump is being deployed during an emergency, ease of priming is essential. Best Fire Defense pumps use an integrated priming system that is easy and intuitive. Other systems require removal of a cap, pouring a large quantity of water into the pump housing, then re-installing the cap and hoping the unit is primed. Improper or insufficient priming can waste precious time or permanently damage a pump and render it unuseable.

What Size Pump Do I Need?

Most single family properties can be protected by the 6.5 horsepower Fire Prevention Pump. However, if your home or other property such as a camp site, farm, building, etc. is over 5000 square feet, the 9 horsepower Fire Prevention Pump is the way to go. The 9 horsepower system is also the right choice if you have unique circumstances (more than 250 feet of fire hose), or an elevation gain of more than 25 feet.

What Accessories Should I Consider?

We strongly recommend the following important accessories

  • Extra Fire Hose – Be sure you have enough hose to fit your Fire Plan.
  • “Y” adapter to allow two separate fire hoses to be deployed.
  • Extra Fire Hose Nozzle – For use with “Y” adapter.
  • Foam Nozzle Kit – Fits onto the end of the fire hose and allows the delivery of foam for greatly enhanced wetness duration and penetration, keeping watered down structures safe for much longer periods.
  • Foam Concentrate – Each 5-gallon container will cover approximately 5000 square feet with Class-A fire retardant foam. Concentrate has a 25 year shelf life.
  • Hose Adapter — Connects pump outlet to a standard garden hose spigot, allowing the pump to use water source to pressurize water back into the house. Note: pool or pond water is not for human consumption; this system is for rinsing dishes, taking showers, or flushing toilets in the event of a prolonged municipal water service interruption..
  • Gasoline Stabilizer – Gasoline can become “stale” if stored for prolonged periods. Gasoline Stabilizer improves storage life of gasoline.
